It can be so easy for me to get swept up in the things that must be done in the daily life of a mother. I often find myself “flying by the seat of my pants.” I look up at the end of the day wondering where the time went and trying to remember if I actually accomplished anything. As a mom of young children, I am comforted by the reminder that despite what I did or did not accomplish for the day, what matters most right now is taking care of my children.
However, the dangerous pitfall in this season is believing the lie that I cannot make time to be with God. When I make the mistake of believing this lie, I am trying to pour out love and care for my family from an empty cup. No one wins in that situation.
We need God’s word to fill our cups with life and truth daily. It is our guide to navigate life and all of its challenges (Psalm 119:105). Most importantly, it is God’s very words spoken to us (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We miss out on the God of the universe encouraging our hearts, when we neglect to spend time in His word.
John expresses why he wrote the book of 1 John:
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life
1 John 5:13
There is such hope in knowing that regardless of what difficulties this season or this life may bring, there is eternal life in the presence of God, free of the weight of this world, awaiting us when we place our trust in Jesus, the Son of God. The main message God wants us to hear that is woven throughout scripture is that we have all fallen short of where we should be (Romans 3:23). This inability to get it right separates us from a holy God making us unworthy of spending eternity in His presence. In fact, it earns us eternity apart from God (Romans 6:23). But God loves us so much, that He wants to be with us forever. God wants to fix the relationship that is broken by our sin. He loves us so much that He gave up His Son, Jesus, to be punished in our place for wrong that we’ve done that separates us from God. The only way to make things right with God again is to believe that Jesus died for your sins, and rose from the dead to give you a restored relationship with God and eternal life (John 3:16).
The ultimate reason we must keep God’s word on our hearts (Deuteronomy 6:6) is because it helps us to believe Jesus. I can write endless posts in an attempt to encourage others, but it is only temporary help if we don’t trust Jesus Christ for our eternal hope. God, I confess that doing things my own way and in my own strength isn’t working. I need Your help. I will trust and follow Christ.
